Antananarivo, November 28, 2024, at Radisson Blu Ambodivona — Under the theme of developing the Internet ecosystem in Madagascar, Peering Day took place with the participation of key national and international stakeholders in the telecommunications sector. Co-organized by Internet Society, Network Information Center Madagascar (NIC.MG), Internet Society Malagasy Chapter, and the National Higher Education and Research Network (iRENALA), this event highlighted the issues, opportunities, and best practices surrounding the revival of peering in Madagascar.

A rich and collaborative program

The day began with welcome remarks from the Internet Society Malagasy Chapter and a representative from the Ministry of Digital Development, Posts, and Telecommunications of Madagascar (MNDPT). The first sessions focused on the digital context and the benefits of peering for Madagascar, hosted by representatives from Internet Society and iRENALA. These sessions raised awareness among participants about the positive impacts of peering on improving the efficiency and resilience of local networks.

The following sessions, which were more practical in nature, explored the key success factors for an Internet Exchange Point (IXP) and the resources available to operators and content providers. These discussions, led by experts from AfriNIC and NIC.MG, emphasized the importance of strengthening the technical capabilities of local infrastructures.

Finally, the closing session highlighted the challenges related to network resilience and the strategic importance of reviving the national IXP, MGIX.

A call to action for a more efficient Internet

This day also included a call for increased cooperation among sector players to build a high-performance Internet ecosystem accessible to all Malagasy people. The next steps will focus on the governance of MGIX and its regulations, leading to its development.
